Point Loma is a seven-mile peninsula that juts out between the open Pacific and San Diego Bay, and the first thing you notice living here is how separate it feels. You're minutes from downtown and the airport, but the peninsula reads quieter, older, and more residential than almost anywhere else this close to the city. It isn't one neighborhood — it's a handful of distinct ones, each with its own character. Here's how they break down and what it's actually like to live here.

The Neighborhoods That Make Up Point Loma

La Playa lines San Diego Bay and holds some of the most sought-after homes in the city — bayfront estates, some with private piers or marina and yacht-club access. It's the high end of the peninsula.

Sunset Cliffs runs along the Pacific side, named for the bluff-top sunsets over the water. Homes here trade on their oceanfront sightlines, and it's one of the most coveted pockets on the coast.

The Wooded Area sits in the hills above La Playa, known for mature trees and larger lots — quiet, established, and among the more upscale stretches.

Roseville and Fleetridge are among the oldest neighborhoods on the peninsula, rooted in Point Loma's tuna-fishing history, with a lot of original mid-century homes.

Loma Portal climbs the bayside hills, with streets named for authors and classic mid-century architecture. It's generally one of the more attainable ways into Point Loma.

Liberty Station is the newest piece — a mixed-use community built on the former Naval Training Center, now home to Liberty Public Market, arts and dining, a nine-hole golf course, a waterfront park, and newer condos, lofts, and stucco single-family homes.

What You Can Walk To and Do

The peninsula is built for the outdoors. Sunset Cliffs Natural Park stretches more than a mile of bluffs, caves, and trails along the Pacific. Cabrillo National Monument sits at the southern tip, marking where Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo first landed in 1542, with some of the best bay-and-skyline views in San Diego. Shelter Island and the bayfront marinas put boating and fishing right at your door, and Liberty Public Market covers the food-and-drink side. Ocean Beach is just to the northwest when you want the boardwalk-and-pier energy.

The Housing — What You'll Actually Find

Point Loma's housing is genuinely varied, which is part of why it works for so many buyers. You'll find original mid-century single-family homes in Loma Portal, Roseville, and Fleetridge; multimillion-dollar bayfront and clifftop estates in La Playa, the Wooded Area, and Sunset Cliffs; and newer condos, lofts, and planned single-family homes in and around Liberty Station. That range means the "right" Point Loma neighborhood depends entirely on what you're after — views, walkability, lot size, age of home, or price point.

Schools

Point Loma is served by San Diego Unified, with Point Loma High School as the area's comprehensive high school. Elementary and middle school assignments depend on your specific address, so if schools are part of your decision, confirm the boundary for any home you're considering before you fall in love with it.

Buying or Selling in Point Loma

Because the peninsula is really several markets in one, pricing and strategy here are anything but one-size-fits-all. A clifftop home in Sunset Cliffs, a mid-century in Loma Portal, and a Liberty Station condo trade on completely different buyer pools and comps. Knowing which pocket a home sits in — and who's actually shopping for it — is the difference between pricing it right and leaving money on the table. That's the part I handle personally.
